Programs and Services
The Six Nations Farmers Association currently runs several programs on behalf of its members and the Six Nations Community.
Agricultural research
The SNFA provides its members with the latest information on sustainable farming and best practices, including no-till or minimum tillage planting techniques; crop rotations; insect control, nutrient management, and controlled pesticide and fertilizer use.
Farm Equipment Sharing Program
The SNFA owns and maintains farm equipment which is leased at a subsidized rate to community members for the planting and harvesting of crops. The lease fees are used to maintain equipment.
Group Purchasing
The SNFA works to obtain competitive pricing for crop input, such as seed and fertilizer, on behalf of its members.
Local Produce
SNFA has designed an eight-acre plot of land to be planted as a designed garden using a variety of heirloom vegetable plants for sale to community members. This project will be used as a pilot to assess the economic feasibility of re-developing the local farm sector to meet the fresh vegetable needs of the community. The pilot project will also be used for educating and encouraging the participation of community youth, in the agriculture sector, in conjunction with partners.
Corn for Community Program
The SNFA provides the production of white corn on behalf of the community. This project has ensured that the community has a source of locally grown white corn and provides an opportunity for the community to observe crop maturation from seed to harvest. 22 acres of white corn is grown annually for community members to pick for their use.
Community Awareness
SNFA works with Six Nations Agriculture Society to bring awareness to the public about agriculture in the area at the Fall Fair. The association also holds an annual School Fall Fair Vegetable Competition in which all students are encouraged to participate.
